Golden spike oil and gas
Upper Devonian (Frasnian) carbonate buildups in Alberta have been the subject of numerous studies since oil was discovered in them over 30 years ago. Of particular importance are Leduc carbonates which are known to contain 4.5 billion barrels of oil and 17 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. However, future sweep efficiency by gas is predicted to be high due to continued drainage of oil off the barriers. Introduction THE GOLDEN SPIKE D3 "A" Pool, located 18 miles southwest of the City of Edmonton in Central Alberta, was discovered in 1949 (Fig. 1). The pool is located on the western, seaward side of a trend of productive Leduc reefs. Many of the fields were found by Imperial Oil, but other major oil companies, such as British American, Gulf, Anglo-Canadian and Home Oil, were also having success. The use of gravimeters (or gravity meters) and improving seismic technology contributed greatly to these discoveries. In 1948, Imperial Oil was faced with a choice to drill near Golden Spike, AB or surrender the land back to the Government. Their seismic data for the area was poor quality and the geophysicist could not identify a drillable target. Imperial’s Calgary Manager ordered the drilling superintendent,

(GLE) performed engineering and technical auditing for the detailed design for a 40 MMSCF/d sour gas plant involving 450 hp acid gas (50% H 2 S) injection, turbo expander and coldbox, ethane extraction, mole sieve, and mercaptan removal. Other wells are soon drilled, and the Turner Valley field becomes Canada’s largest oil and gas producer. SALT LAKE CITY – A federal appeals board has cleared the way for oil and gas drilling around prehistoric ruins in southern Utah. In the same ruling, the Interior Board of Land Appeals found that federal officials also took appropriate care in deciding to lease another parcel near northern Utah’s Golden Spike National Historic Site. The Golden Spike Field, nine miles (15 km) west of Edmonton, Alberta, is primarily known for Imperial Oil Limited's 1949 discovery of the Golden Spike South D3 Pool. There are, however, significant gas reserves in the Mannville Group, specifically the Glauconite and Ellerslie formations.
