U.s. oil production

Crude oil is produced in 32 U.S. states and in U.S. coastal waters. In 2018, about 68% of total U.S. crude oil production came from five states. In 2018, nearly 16% of U.S. crude oil was produced from wells located offshore in the federally administered waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

State production estimates reported by EIA are normally different from data reported by state agencies. For example, production estimates for Texas reported on table 26 are different from production reported by the Railroad Commission of Texas. And while most of the coverage of the resurgence of U.S. oil production has been primarily focused on shale oil and tight oil, U.S. offshore oil production has also made a big jump. Over the past decade, Gulf Coast oil production in the U.S. rose from about 1.2 million BPD to about 2.0 million BPD. Crude oil is produced in 32 U.S. states and in U.S. coastal waters.
