Case mix index benchmarks

This file contains hospitals case mix indexes (CMI) for discharges. A hospital's CMI represents the average diagnosis-related group (DRG) relative weight for that hospital. It is calculated by summing the DRG weights for all Medicare discharges and dividing by the number of discharges. A case-mix index is computed for each base MS-DRG to determine its average severity. Benchmarking this CMI is helpful in determining whether a base MS-DRG's complication rates are higher or lower than expected. Capture rates are used to help compare the incidence of patients with complications as a percentage of total patients. The Case Mix Index has historically been used to calculate adjusted average cost per patient (or day) for a given hospital relative to the adjusted average cost for other hospitals by dividing the average cost per patient (or day) by the hospital’s calculated CMI.
